The Latest Summer Fashion Trends

Spring is here and it’s time to get a head start on preparing your wardrobe for summer 2017. Gather your basics and get inspired by the season’s hottest trends that you can actually wear in real life. From bohemian-chic to bold printed shorts, dramatic backless dresses, or some peek-a-boo lace, these 5 trends will guarantee that you look hot this summer!

1. Boho Chic

The term “boho-chic” gets thrown around a lot these days and many of the latest summer trends incorporate the look. So firstly, let’s make sure you’re cued up about this hot look for summer. Short for “bohemian,” boho as a style is most closely associated with the hippies of the ‘60s and ‘70s, but it’s borrowed from so many time periods and fashion subcultures that almost any outfit can be “boho” if styled right.

Get the look by wearing retro-inspired floral maxi skirts or maxi dresses (Balenciaga, Gucci, Michael Kors collections proved the point), rock ‘n’ roll/slogan T-shirts, crop tops (especially crocheted ones), bra tops are in full force (pair it with a high-wasted maxi skirt), and single, Flashdance-inspired cold shoulder blouses and tops.

Denim is in so good news for DIY enthusiasts — denims, denim shorts, and denim jackets. Footwear is sneakers(lucky you don’t have to ditch your favorite converse pair), suede booties, or Grecian flat sandals with loads of bling. Accessories are layered beaded jewelry, bandanas, round sunglasses (think John Lennon), anklets (Hermès models wore necklaces wrapped several times around the ankle for a cool- effect and easy way to DIY the look yourself), and slinging on a fringed suedette bag.

2. Printed Shorts

If you’ve got the legs, flaunt them with a bright, eye-catching set of printed shorts. Balance the look with a relaxed and solid blouse, as seen on the runway at Barbara Bui and on Solange Knowles.

3. Instagram Hues

Bolder shades of Instagram’s favorite hues are taking center stage for spring and summer. Think fuchsia, raspberry and hot pink as seen on the runway by designers like Bottega Veneta and Hermès.

4. Dresses

Nothing gets things sizzling like Azzaro and Kate Mara’s dramatic cutout dresses— they’re all business in front and a revealing party at the back. If that’s too risky for you, dresses in bold, geometric stripes and bright colors are also an easy way to make a statement this summer. Check out Fendi, Proenza Schouler, and Sonia Rykiel’s runway looks for inspiration. Chloé and Tibi also showed that yellow is making a bold comeback whether done in ruffles, cut-out shoulders, or a classic shirtdress. If Beyoncé can pull it off so can you!

5. Peek-a-Boo Lace

Like the old schoolyard game “now we see you, now we don’t,” these playful styles are coming out of hiding this season. Sheer breezy sundresses — off-the-shoulder or short-sleeved — are perfect as bathing suit cover-ups for a day at the beach or a night out on the town.

Before throwing out anything in your wardrobe, do a bit of digging (even through your junk jewelry) and you’ll be surprised how many past fashion trends can be blended together to pull off a totally cool summer 2017 look!
