This Summer’s Latest Hair Trends

Hot off the runway this season come some exciting hair trends to give you the inspiration to try something completely different – be it the latest rainbow hair, bangs, power curls, the beach-look, the wet-look, braids, ultra-long hair, Michelle Pfeiffer’s Scarface, and much more. Whichever look you go for, remember that power and confidence is in the air!

Brave it and Go Color

Balayage- highlighting the hair so that the dye is painted on to create a graduated, natural-looking effect- is growing in popularity.  A more extreme look is denim hair-  something in between the pastel blue and electric blue shades we’ve seen over last seasons. Another cool trend is grey hair worn either solid grey or with a bit of grey balayage.

Dare to Go Short?

Spring/Summer 2017 offered several revived options for shorter locks- whether you sport curls or modern pixie cuts, short is the way to go. The look was all over the runway from Balenciaga (super short with the bottom of the hair cut in 70s mullet), to Fendi (short hair with glitter lips and oversized shades), Giorgio Armani (super short and pulled back on one side, sleek and bob-length on the other), Prada (cool and short retro bobs), Cara (long bob aka the “lob”), and Dior (the pixie cut with a femininely delicate fringe). Also totally in are micro fringes and choppy bangs. This also fits in with the surf grunge/70’s hippy/rebellious youth look (yip, you can dig out those bandanas).

Powerful or Plaited

Models at many shows wore their hair as a symbol of confidence. Tibi models strutted their stuff with ponytails adorned in belt-styled ribbons; Sportsmax ponytails were strong and textured; Nicholas K presented super high hair; Carolina Herrera had sculpted crossover styles; while many other shows had simple, but slicked-back, uber cool styles especially a simple behind-the-ear tuck with a slightly damp look. The hair at Cushnie et Ochs was inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer’s in Scarface- a deep side part, blown out with a rounded brush for sweeping curled ends. In fact, this season ushers in gelled manes whether worn slick or grungy/rock-chick inspired, but all without the greasy look.

There were many versions of braids too, including fishtail plaits down the centre of a parting to zig-zag or unicorn braids. Gucci had extreme braiding (not a DIY job) and Erdem had pretty and cute plaited buns wrapped in ribbon. Hairbands, clips, jewelry, ribbons and flowers were an overall trend and you can get creative, especially if you’re having a bad hair day.

Eighties inspired power curls and corkscrews are also having their moment, so no more complaints that you can’t do anything with your hair!
